Commencing Your Job Search

When you're about to begin your job search, there are some important areas to think about:

  • Evaluate why you want to look for a new position. It’s important to think about what are the "push" factors as to why you might leave your current company. You also need to think clearly about the types of roles that you want to do going forward.
  • Review and update your current resume. (Please refer to the section on “Preparing Your Resume”).
  • Review your current contract with your employer to ensure you know the work restrictions and notice period.
  • Make sure you have a LinkedIn profile that's fully up-to-date with current information and correct dates as per your resume.
  • Consider the types of companies you would like to work for and have a clear plan for the roles you'll consider.
  • Think about your current remuneration package and the remuneration package you'll consider going forward. It’s important that you do research around this to ensure your expectations are in line with the market for your skills and experience.
  • Approach 1 to 2 professional search firms that know your sector very well. By doing this, you'll have the confidence that you're partnering with a firm that understands your skills / experience while having the network to best represent you to the right companies.
